Scotts EZ Seed Review

When I first saw this product in the store all I could think of was the infomercial with grass seed growing on a cinder block.  After a few visits to Lowes and a few more thin spots in my yard I decided to pick up a container of EZ Seed.  It was the plastic shaker can and was priced at $14.97.  I though this was a bit high, but still decided to give it a test.

I put the product down 12 days ago and had a mixed weather.  Highs of 84 and lows of 38 and rain and sun.  The grass did germinate quickly, but didn’t fill in well. I also had a problem keeping the EZ Seed wet.  It seemed to dry out quickly.  I watered it as much as I would plain grass seed.

Pros: Fast germination, easily to apply, and adequte directions.

Cons: Expensive, poor coverage, and poor water retention.

Overall Rating: Average.  I might buy this product for small applications (i.e. to replace a pulled weed), but not for anything bare area larger than a dinner plate.  I prefer the Scotts Patchmaster product for these applications.

  3. I’d have to disagree with the “poor water retention” assessment. First off, it has special water crystals that retain water so it’s impossible for it to not be better than just plain seed alone. That said, I have been using it for 4 to 5 days now and I don’t have to water the Scott’s EZ seed patch every day. They say to water it and it turns dark brown. Then when it turns light brown it’s time to water again. Well it took 3 days before it even began to turn light brown. Some patches took 2 days. I really think it all depends on where you live. If you live in a dry state like Arizona, I don’t think anything would stay wet for very long. But I live on the East coast and EZ Seed is working as advertised in terms of water retention. It’s too soon to see grass grow though… .
